Exploring the New Veterinarian Club at Fontana High School!
Angel Onofre, Staff Writer
What is the Veterinarian Club?
Recently a new club has taken residency in Fontana high school, this being our new Veterinarian club. Being established by Alicen Figureoa, the president, Veterinarian Club was created to be a place where students or members can learn about animal care and veterinary science through the prosses of hands-on activities, workshops, volunteering, and field trips.
Activities and Events
While being a new club they are still looking for volunteer opportunities to offer any students interested in the field apart from those younger than 18. They are still in the process of connecting with the correct people from ranches to other places, but it’s a planned goal for the future of the club. They are simultaneously looking into organizing field trips for active members to locations such as the Aquarium of the Pacific or well-known zoos. While still undetermined, the club would appreciate the feedback from members on where to go. Officers have also planned to set up various workshops from learning how to perform CPR on a dog or cat, resuscitating any other animal, or to knowing what to do if your dog has been injured. You can also contact them through their Instagram @FOHIVETERINARIANCLUB where they make announcements about club meetings and new events/ activities.
How to help
Everything the club does which requires money comes out of their own pockets. From giving food and drinks after club meetings, funding field trips, to other necessities to manage the club. For these reasons, the Veterinarian Club is accepting donations. While the prices are not set in stone yet, as of now the amount of money you can donate are 5$ 10$ 20$ and 40$. Donors will be given custom key chains made from laser engraved wood from the Neuro-prosthetics class as a form of gratitude. You can come visit miss bravo to donate in T104 you need your ID on you and will receive a receipt of your donation. You could also visit the bookkeeper and donate there.
Meet the Officers
Hello, my name is Alicen Figueroa, and I am the president and co-founder of the veterinarian club. A little about me personally, I do like playing video games. I play GTA,
Call of Duty, you know the basics. Another thing that I like to do is play soccer in my free time, I like to go out at night, walking around, that is something that I’ve been trying to do every day but I'm just trying to focus on trying to make FUSD a bigger place to offer more opportunities for other people, especially as a new transfer student this year as I did transfer from a different district. I been able to see different districts and see what they were missing, which was making a community in their school rather than focusing on their academics. What we are trying to do with this club is focus on the veterinary field, as we know many people, like me and friends I know, that are interested in becoming veterinarians. Some things we are trying to do are to introduce services for FUSD and FOHI to new opportunities which they can take part in. Our focus this year, especially as a new club, is to make a community of people interested in this field, to create volunteering opportunities, and doing field trips. Mainly stuff that is more hands on instead of leaning more towards information. If this is interesting to you, don't be shy to come over here for the next meetings, we do have an Instagram account FOHI veterinarian club.
Hi, I’m Ana, the vice president of the club. So, I mainly take care of all the things that Alicen our president can't do as since we do have a busy work and school schedule, so we try to help each other with planning and getting the word out when meeting are happening or helping out by keeping things manageable for everyone so that no one feels overwhelmed. We try to keep the club enjoyable without feeling like it’s too much to handle. We try to keep the expirations low. We couldn't have done any of this without our adviser Miss Bravo, she's amazing. She helps us between the club and class and keeps us on task. Me and Alicen were just messing around in class talking about starting a club and it never really clicked to us that we would ever start a veterinarian club. We were chatting with a substitute, asking him if he would be our advisor and it really sparked an interest in us and that's how it started. I do half the work everyone else does from making posters to letting people know when meetings are or talking to administrators. It brings me a lot of joy to open this club with my friend Alicen. I am also a very new assistant at an animal hospital and enjoy working with my coworkers and the animals I get. Recently I adopted a cat from my work, she was brought in by a man who just thrown her to my coworker and left with saying that it was our problem now. So, I took the liberty of taking her home without my parents knowing. She was so scrawny then and now she's so big, and I just love watching her grow.
My name is Jasmine Vargas, I am the treasurer of the veterinarian club. I was really interested in this club initially when my friends started it, and I thought it would be good for experience in animal related things. I've had a lot of pets at home and have always been very used to animals with the goal of working with them in the future. After high school I plan on going to college for four years and major in biology then transfer to a vet school. While I'm still not sure yet what position I would want to be in the vet field, but I know I want to be in that sort of field. While in this club, I'm also currently captain in color guard, been in color guard for four years, key club, Renaissance, and Big brother Big Sister. Hobbies, I like to draw and paint, which is why I am in AP art. I also like to run after school, and I love music.
Hi, my name is Vanessa, and I’m the secretary of the Veterinarian Club. My job is to schedule and plan our meetings. It's a very important role I play in the club because working around people's schedule and seeing what day the best is important. Time management is a big part of my job, and I’m good at it. The reason I joined veterinarians club was to expand my own horizon of being a veterinarian or working in that animal care field. I believe that this will help my future considering that I do want to get into the medical field, and I feel like this club is really going to align with my goals. Some of my hobbies consist of drawing and art in general. I also like taking care of kids and babysitting and have been approved for Big Brother Big Sister mentoring club, and I'm excited about that.
