FOHI’s Forgotten Academic Triumphs and Awards
Matthew Barrera, Vice President and Staff Writer
Ever since Fontana High School was built in 1952, our Steelers have strived to show just how great we are not only through sports, but also academically. Many of our students on campus, including even many staff and faculty, are not aware of the number of Academic Awards and Trophies our Steelers have won through their many accomplishments. For the most part, in the 80s and 90s Fontana High School participated in many Academic Decathlons and brought home many placement trophies including those of 1st and 2nd place. Academic decathlons are competitions where different groups of students compete in ten different academic events, such as math, speaking, writing, or science, against each other. These competitions were held in order to find students with a well-rounded amount of academic knowledge. Just some of the awards FOHI has received over the years include two 1st place trophies from the 1987 and 1993 San Bernardino County Academic Decathlon, and one 2nd place trophy from the same competition.
Fontana High School has not only participated in Academic Decathlons, but they have also competed in the 2009-2010 Environmental Youth Leadership Conference and Reunion. This award was given to students in FOHI’s Fontana Conservation Club through their efforts to create a sustainable environment for our future.
Although everybody loves to get hyped up for all our wonderful sport games and CIF playoffs, we should all show some love and acknowledge many of our current academic achievements all around campus. Fontana High School bolsters a wide variety of AP classes and pathways for students to learn in. Without forgetting that Fontana High School has the most CTE pathways in the Fontana Unified District; we should focus on academic a lot more than we have been the past few decades. Though our school may not be in anymore Academic Decathlons, we should all still appreciate our current academic triumphs, both past and present.
