The Steeler stadium that was built in 1954 by the Steelworkers from Kaiser Steel and recently was under renovations, finally was reopened at the beginning of the school year. It was dedicated to Coach Dick Bruich, or Coach B, who was a teacher and coach in Fontana for over 30 years. He joined the football staff in 1975 and went on to take the helm of Fohi’s football program. During his 22 years as Head coach, he went on to win National Championships, two state championships, two CIF championships and much more. He was also admitted to several Halls of Fame.
Expectations
Due to his legacy of hard work our school dedicated the Steeler stadium and field in his honor. It was expected that our students and faculty care for our track and field and the entire stadium. Unfortunately, we have fallen short of those expectations. Recently, the coaches and student athletes have been encountering trash and food on our field and track. There have been many incidents where our athletes and coaches have toiled over picking up trash on the field and track. Whether it be leftover food like an Uncrushable stuck to the track or random plastic on the field, it has been a reoccurring problem for our athletes and coaches when it is not their responsibility. Their responsibility is to train our athletes to be the best they can be.
What can we do to help?
It is the responsibility of our students to keep our stadium clean by just simply throwing away and picking up the trash that they drop. This behavior is disrespectful to our faculty members that stay up late everyday picking up trash from the ground all around the school, and it’s also disrespectful to Coach B, the man who this field is dedicated to for a reason.
I interviewed Mrs. Chavez, the Track and field coach, and she said that, “It is all our responsibilities to maintain our facilities clean. From student/athletes cleaning up after themselves to coaches, teachers, and staff properly supervising and upholding the rules when student/athletes are using the facilities. No one should have to walk onto the track, gym, restrooms etc. and see it trashed. Showing Steeler Pride means respecting our facilities.”
As Mrs. Chavez mentioned, no one wants to see trash everywhere, or anywhere in general and certainly not have to clean it up. There are many solutions that we can use to help maintain our campus clean and they don’t take any time out of our busy days. It’s not rocket science. Simply throw away our trash when we are done with it. Secondly, we can also just save our trash and just throw it away later or at home. It is simple as that. It will save everyone time and energy by just simply throwing away our trash and saving other students and faculty from having to pick up trash that is not theirs.
So, lets have some respect to our Coach Bruich and our faculty members and students/athletes and try to do our very best to keep our campus clean. So, Lets call upon all of our amazing steelers to have respect for our campus by keeping it spotless.
