Many of our readers are in their junior year of high school, and some of them took the PSAT back in October. However, unless they are in AVID, it is harder to hear news and know the importance of the SAT, which all AVID students are already registered for.
If you are not in AVID, you may know this big test is optional and some major schools are test-blind, but it is still highly recommended you register and take this free test. For example, two students with identical academic and extracurricular stats could be told apart by the higher test score, and that student will have a higher chance of being accepted.
It is a clever idea to take advantage of the opportunity our school is giving us. This will be the first SAT that will be fully online, and these juniors will be the first class to take their SAT like this. Thus -as corny as it sounds- will be a part of history. Our school covers the complete cost of these otherwise expensive and important tests. Besides, the SAT is an effective way to make sure your skills are college-bound; it is a safe way to challenge oneself.
There are several effective ways to prep yourself for this exam, and there are a lot of great free resources online and on paper, because let us be realistic, we live in Fontana, and we probably won’t hire a weekly private SAT tutor. The best thing we could do is to take advantage of free help. For example, Khan Academy has an entire practice course online for free. Mr. Avendano had his AVID students practice there during class time, and it gave practice and set a picture in their minds as to what to expect for the SAT and to be more prepared for exam day. You can also use SAT textbooks and workbooks to help familiarize yourself with the test. Take full-length practice exams.
If you are not registered, talk to your counselor. Just remember to do your best but do not sweat it either!
