FOHI Theater’s “She Kills Monsters”
She Kills Monsters is the fall play for the 2024-2025 year of Fontana High School. The play is about a normal high school cheerleader, Agnes Evans, who loses her younger sister in a car accident. Her late sister, Tilly, was infatuated with the game Dungeons and Dragons; intrigued by this game, Agnes plays for the first time and discovers just how little she knew her sister. The story is set in Ohio in 1995 and covers topics of loss, grief, and imagination! With so many fascinating props and costumes, along with insanely cool fight sequences, this show is sure to leave you laughing and possibly crying at the same time!
I went into our lovely auditorium to speak with the crew of She Kills Monsters and ask about their perspectives on the show, as well as to see the work they’ve done!
Theater Staff Interviews
Susanna “Siouxsie” Medina plays Agnes Evans, the main character of our show. A lot of time and effort is put to work as this young actress prepares for her performances on November 14th, 15th, and 16th! When interviewed, Siouxsie (pronounced Suzie) has this to say: “This show is truly amazing, I appreciate the amazing cast and crew and wouldn’t want to work with anyone else. I’ve had a blast bringing this show to life and I hope everyone enjoys it as much as we do! My favorite thing about the show is being able to do what I love with some of my closest friends, and that I am about to portray a character’s thoughts, actions, and feelings that aren’t mine, almost like escaping my own reality and entering a whole new world! My favorite character in the show is probably Orcus, overlord of the Underworld! He’s so sarcastic and funny. I absolutely love how my cast mate Christian delivers his dry humor!”
Brandon Nunez, a first-time actor, portrays the Dungeon Master of the story, Chuck Biggs! Chuck Biggs is a geekster teen who loves Dungeons and Dragons (D&D). Brandon says that “Chuck is my favorite character because of his relatability and comedy. At no point is he never not adding humor to the play. I also may be a little biased as I play him and am a D&D player, just like him. Get tickets to see She Kills Monsters!! The amount of puppetry in this show is insane and you won’t want to miss out on a five-headed dragon. It is our most technically impressive theater production play to date!”
Sky Tule, the actor of Tilly Evans/Tillius, the late sister of Agnes Evans and the great Paladin of the party says that “my favorite thing about working on the show is getting to work with not only the other actors during scenes but with the technicians who help with props and the set. My favorite character is Agnes! Fohi theatre has become a place where i get to enjoy the art of theatre and hang out with the amazing people who help make the shows possible. Please make sure to come and support us!”
Emma Grijalva, the actress bringing the dark elf Kaliope Darkwalker, is another actor that I have been able to interview: “My favorite thing about working on the show is seeing everything come together and watching all of our hard work be put together perfectly! My favorite character has to be Chuck Biggs, AKA DM* Biggs because he’s just so comedic and geeky!” is what Emma excitedly reports. *DM: Dungeon Master
Roxanna Soltero, who plays Lillith/Lily in this production says, “My favorite thing about working on the show is that I get to work with my friends and improve my acting. My favorite characters are Steve or Chuck because they’re so funny! You should come watch the play because there are sword fights, people flying around, puppets, and it’s super funny.”
Hayley Shelley King is a member of the costume crew who not only helps in the design/making of the costumes and makeup, but also helps the rest of the beloved Tech crew here and there with whatever needs making! “My favorite thing about working on the show is the friends I make while we work. I’ve met so many amazing people that I probably wouldn’t have met if I hadn’t joined the theater. I also just love sewing and costume design, and I’ve met people with similar interests through working on shows together!” Hayley says, “My favorite character is definitely Kaliope! She is the dark elf character in the play. If I were an actor, I would have definitely auditioned for her part, and I was excited about her costume the most!”
Karyme Solis, the Sound technician of She Kills Monsters is hard at work for her first play as the sound technician. The microphone and sound effects are her orchestration, and all of the hard work she, and every member of this crew, put into the show is bound to make it a play to remember: “I really love working on props for the show and finding the right sounds for scenes. I personally really love Chuck—he’s a very silly and funny character! Please come support the production and enjoy the great work we’ve done!”
Azul Gonzalez, an assistant director, an actress of whom you might recognize as last year’s Ellie Blake of Freaky Friday shares her thoughts: “My favorite thing about working on the show is seeing all the props being built and seeing the dragon come to life. Personally, my favorite character is Farrah the Faerie—Please come see the show to see the great Tiamat come to life!”
Final Thoughts:
There are many more incredible and hardworking members of this cast and crew who I was unable to interview/speak to! Thank you to all of our Theater Steelers for your hard work on a show that I know will turn out to be a work of art.
