Mrs. Costa is one of the most hardworking staff here at FOHI, carrying the AVID program which holds an elite status that only 3% of AVID schools worldwide can achieve. This itself is not easily achieved, but we have continued to make this possible with Mrs. Costa in charge of the program. She has not only carried the whole avid program, but she is always willing to help any student that is in need of any help whether that be her own student or a random kid. So, it is not surprising that Mrs. Costa was awarded the teacher of the year award which was well deserved. The Steeler Chronicle congratulates Mrs. Costa on her achievement. Here is an exclusive interview with her:
1. What initiatives have you implemented as an AVID coordinator that have had a significant impact on student learning outcomes?
College App Day actually started in the AVID classrooms. When I first started teaching AVID, I invited parents to sit with the seniors to submit college applications and we celebrated with cookies during the AVID class. After that, Fohi decided that what is good for AVID students is good for all students which has turned into the grand celebration it is now.
2. Can you share a memorable moment from your teaching career that exemplifies your dedication to your students' success?
Having students come back after they have graduated and let me know how they are doing in both life and college is one of the best aspects of teaching.
3. What advice would you give to aspiring teachers who also aspire to take on leadership roles within their school or district?
Be prepared to be very organized and have good time management skills. Be prepared to work closely with others and be vocal. Be flexible.
4. Can you share a personal anecdote that illustrates the rewards and challenges of being both a teacher and a mom?
Being able to have my children attend my school and stop by just to say hello is awesome. I get to see them on a regular basis. Fun fact: next year, all 5 of us will be at Fohi (my husband and 3 kids). Three years ago, when my son was a freshman, he rode to school daily with me and we were able to have many conversations that we probably would not have been able to have if he had gone to another school.
5. What motivated you to become a teacher, and what keeps you passionate about education year after year?
Actually, I have always wanted to be a teacher. I remember going home in 2nd grade and telling my mom that I wanted to be a teacher. She just said, “that’s nice” and went on cooking dinner. In 6th grade, my teacher allowed me to complete math at our own pace. I completed the 6th grade math book and was almost finished with the 7th grade math book by the end of the year. This is when I fell in love with math. Throughout high school, I worked well within groups and enjoyed helping others. Thus, leading me to become a teacher and major in education in college. I love working with the students. They are what keep me coming back year after year.
6. What has changed for you after becoming teacher if the year.
I don’t feel that anything has changed for me after receiving teacher of the year. I continue to teach my classes and work with staff as I have before.
7. What do you believe contributed to you becoming teacher of the year.
I don’t know if there is anything special, I have done to become teacher of the year. I have just worked with my students, both math and AVID students, to help them become better people and still learn the material. I am also very involved in different leadership positions on campus with AVID coordinator being the biggest.
