A new gem-worthy entry lies ahead in 2024 to contradict claims made of this year being a “filler year”; a term used to highlight the abundance of projects being delayed into 2025 and beyond because of the acting strike witnessed in 2023. However, the year has been shaping up to exceed expectations with there being a variety to anticipate. These are some of the must watch movies in 2024 that you do not want to miss out on in the theaters:
May 24th – “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is the upcoming prequel to “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015) with returning director George Miller. The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth in what is sure to be a contender for best action movie of the year. With the star leads and a direct connection to one of the greatest action movies of our generation, it is safe to expect another bucket from George Miller.
July 5th – “MaXXXine” is the third and final entry of the “X” trilogy from director Ti West. The star of the show -Mia Goth -reprises her role of Maxine in what many expect to be a worthy ending to a tremendous slasher trilogy. This will be a bet that’s sure to hit for a horror movie of the year contender, and if that isn’t enough to convince you, Giancarlo Esposito (Gus Fring from Breaking Bad) has a role in this.
July 26th – “Deadpool & Wolverine” is the third entry in the “Deadpool” trilogy. This is Deadpool’s first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and if that wasn’t reason enough to be interested, Hugh Jackman is returning as Wolverine to play a major role in this movie. There is nothing else I can say to sell this to you; it literally writes itself.
August 16th – “Alien: Romulus” is the new standalone movie from the “Alien” franchise that has the potential to revive the franchise with further new projects. Normally, this sounds like a movie many would be skeptical of as reviving old series has not has the best track record. However, the reason to be excited for this entry is because Fede Alvarez is the director of “Alien: Romulus”; Alvarez is the director who directed “Evil Dead” (2013) and “Don’t Breathe” (2016) which are two great horror movies.
October 4th – “Joker: Folie a Deux” is the sequel to 2019’s “Joker” that is set to be the introduction of Harley Quinn played by Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix returning as the Joker. The movie is set to be a musical which has brought many to be unsure of their excitement, but we should welcome the idea of director Todd Philips trying a different idea because you just never know what might work.
This is only the surface of what else is to come this year. The best part is you don’t have to wait to enjoy this year of film; currently in theaters are the critically acclaimed movies “Dune: Part Two” and “Love Lies Bleeding” which are both top contenders for movie of the year so far. While there have been many disappointing delays, we should not allow it to taint the ability to enjoy what we are still getting in the present.
