There is a club problem at FOHI. Many people new to the school do not know what is offered in terms of extracurricular activities outside of sports.
This is unfortunate as these activities are needed to bolster chances of appearing as an attractive candidate to colleges. These clubs also build school spirit.
This number may be erroneous as I know some are not actually accepting members or holding regular meetings. For example, AP Chem club is not holding regular meetings but is registered as a club. However, you would not know this because there is no list or ready information available for students to see clubs at FOHI
However, you would not know this because there is no list available for students to see the types of clubs at FOHI.
One might suggest that club rush is a place where you would go to find clubs. I stayed during the last Club Rush on February 15th, and at least 3 clubs that I know of that hold regular meetings (psychology club, LINK crew, and French club) did not attend. From my count, 15 clubs attended (including band, ROTC, soccer, water polo, and football, which are not really clubs). So, only 10 clubs that students can join without requirements attended.
While it is great that sports are represented, those who are not so athletically inclined may wish to see other options. This brings us to another method – announcements.
However, this also falls short as not every club is mentioned in it, and the news is biased towards sports; that is assuming you hear announcements which do not happen every day, are often talked over, and the intercom audio is subpar.
Fortunately, the daily announcements are posted on teams, but they suffer the same information bias as mentioned above. Posters have the same problem as club rush in that not all clubs participate in creating them. The only way that I got the list is that I had to bother Mr. Sindelar who generously emailed me the list that ASB uses.
What can be done?
My suggestion is that the Club list be available in teams, in the counselor’s office, and on the school website. I suggest that all people participating in clubs and their Advisors spread word of mouth and work to participate in Club Rush and make posters. I also think that the number of clubs at this school (considering the size of this campus) is lackluster. I would also encourage students who have an idea for a community to find an advisor and found a club and then advertise it extensively.
